What should you know about a DEXA DXA body scan?

DEXA, also written DXA, uses two low-dose X-ray beams to estimate how much mineral is present in selected bones. A standard study commonly examines the hip and lower spine. Some facilities also offer a whole-body assessment that estimates lean tissue, fat tissue and bone mineral. These results can support a clinician’s assessment, but they do not diagnose health or fitness on their own.

Wear clothing without metal fasteners if possible and tell the imaging team about pregnancy, a recent examination using contrast material, or metal in the area being scanned. Follow the facility’s instructions about food, supplements and medicines. During the appointment, you lie still on a scanning table while the arm of the machine passes over you. The test does not require an injection, and you can usually return to normal activities afterward.

Contact the ordering clinician if you are unsure why the scan was requested or how to interpret a result. Seek urgent care for a new severe injury, sudden inability to bear weight, or severe back pain with leg weakness or loss of bladder or bowel control; these concerns need assessment beyond a routine scan.

Ask which body areas will be measured, whether the appointment is for bone density or body composition, and how the result will affect your care. You can also ask whether a previous scan should be compared and when follow-up is appropriate.
