What should you know about a DEXA body scan machine?

The equipment has a flat table and a scanning arm that moves above the body without enclosing you. It uses different X-ray energies to distinguish bone from soft tissue. Depending on the service requested, the software may produce a bone-density result, a body-composition report, or both. The machine does not remove tissue and the scan does not require an injection. Results still need clinical interpretation because technical factors, positioning and the purpose of the examination affect what the report means.

Wear comfortable clothes and remove metal items when asked. Tell the technologist if you may be pregnant, have recently received contrast for another imaging test, or need help transferring onto the table. You will be positioned carefully and asked to remain still while the arm scans you. Let staff know if pain makes the position difficult. Follow local instructions about food, drink and supplements, since preparation can differ between a bone-density examination and a body-composition assessment.

The machine itself should not cause pain, but report discomfort from positioning so it can be addressed. Seek medical assessment for severe back or hip pain after a fall, or urgent help for new weakness, numbness, chest pain or marked breathing difficulty. These concerns require attention independently of the scan report.

Ask what type of DEXA examination was ordered, which body regions will be scanned, when results will be available, and whether any medicines or supplements need special instructions.
