What should you know about dermatology microneedling?

Short answer
Dermatology microneedling uses fine sterile needles to create controlled skin micro-injuries that can support collagen remodelling and improve selected texture, scarring, and pigmentation concerns.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How microneedling works
A clinician passes a microneedling device over cleansed skin. The needle depth and treatment pattern are selected for the body area and the concern being treated. The healing response can gradually make the surface feel smoother, while the skin may look temporarily red or swollen. Microneedling is used for concerns such as acne scarring, uneven texture, some fine lines, and selected pigmentation problems, including melasma and sun-damaged skin. Results develop as the skin remodels rather than appearing immediately.
A microneedling pen is a device used to deliver the treatment; RF microneedling adds radiofrequency energy and is a different procedure. Fractional laser treatment is another option whose suitability depends on skin type, the target concern, and previous treatments.
Preparing for treatment and recovery
Before treatment, tell the clinician about active acne, cold sores, eczema, psoriasis, keloid scarring, medicines, and recent sun exposure. Do not treat over an active skin infection or an open wound. Follow the clinic’s instructions about pausing irritating skincare products, if advised. Afterward, use gentle cleansing, moisturiser, and broad-spectrum sun protection as directed. Avoid picking, vigorous rubbing, heat exposure, swimming, and strong exfoliants until the skin has settled. The number and spacing of sessions depend on the concern and the skin’s response.
When to seek care
Contact the treating clinic if redness, swelling, pain, crusting, or oozing is worsening instead of settling, or if you develop pus, spreading warmth, fever, or a blistering rash. Seek prompt medical advice for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or rapidly worsening symptoms. New or persistent darkening after treatment should also be assessed, particularly when treating melasma or another pigmentation concern.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which concern the treatment is intended to address, what needle depth is appropriate for your area, whether your current skincare or medicines need adjustment, how long visible irritation may last, and which changes should prompt a review. Ask whether microneedling, RF microneedling, or fractional laser treatment better matches your skin type and goal.

Questions people ask
Can microneedling treat pigmentation?
It may be considered for selected pigmentation concerns, but melasma can be sensitive to irritation and requires careful planning and sun protection.
Can I use home microneedling equipment?
Home devices differ from clinically controlled treatment and may cause irritation or infection; discuss the safest approach with a qualified clinician.
