Dermaplaning and microneedling: what to know

Dermaplaning uses a blade to remove surface cells and fine facial hair. Microneedling uses fine needles to create controlled punctures that prompt a healing response deeper in the skin. It may be considered for texture, acne scarring, or some pigment concerns, but suitability depends on the diagnosis and skin tone. Combining procedures can increase irritation and makes timing, product choice, and infection control more important. A microneedling pen is a device used to deliver the needle treatment; settings should be selected for the individual area.

Have the clinician inspect for active acne, cold sores, eczema, infection, sunburn, or a flare of melasma before treatment. Share medicines, recent peels or laser treatment, tendency to form raised scars, and any history of prolonged pigment changes. Do not schedule procedures close together without specific advice. After treatment, keep hands and products clean, use a bland moisturiser, protect against sunlight, and avoid picking or harsh exfoliation. Ask whether microneedling, RF microneedling, or fractional laser treatment better matches your concern; these are different procedures, not interchangeable labels.

Seek medical advice for increasing pain, spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, extensive swelling, blistering, or a rash that is not settling. New darkening or lightening that persists also deserves review, particularly after treatment for melasma or sun-damaged skin. Pause further procedures until the cause is clear.
