Who can get dengue?

Dengue is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito, not through ordinary casual contact between people. People living in or visiting areas where dengue occurs may be exposed. Symptoms can include fever, headache, muscle aches, joint pain, chills, rash, or easy bruising.

A clinician may want earlier review for a pregnant person, an infant or child, an older adult, or someone with conditions affecting bleeding, immunity, the liver, kidneys, or heart. This does not mean dengue will be severe; it means symptoms and hydration may need closer attention.

Use mosquito repellent, wear clothing that covers skin, and reduce standing water near the home. If symptoms develop, rest and drink regularly. Tell the clinician where you have travelled or lived, when symptoms began, your medicines, and any pregnancy or long-term health conditions.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for a child, pregnant person, older adult, or anyone with a chronic illness who develops dengue-like symptoms. Seek emergency help for bleeding, severe belly pain, repeated vomiting, breathing trouble, faintness, confusion, marked drowsiness, or inability to keep fluids down.

Ask whether your age, pregnancy, medicines, or health history changes monitoring; whether testing is needed; and what specific symptoms should trigger same-day or emergency care.
