Dengue temperature: what to know

Fever is a common presentation of dengue and may occur with headache, chills, muscle aches, joint pain, nausea or rash. The number on a thermometer is only one part of the picture: hydration, alertness, breathing, pain and bleeding also matter. A fever may ease while other warning signs develop, so do not use an improving temperature as the only reason to stop monitoring. A clinician can interpret the pattern alongside exposure history and examination.

Measure temperature with the same device and method when possible, and record the time and any medicine taken. Rest, wear light clothing and drink regularly. Ask a pharmacist or doctor which fever medicine is suitable; avoid aspirin and ibuprofen unless specifically advised because bleeding can be a concern. Book a GP Consultation if fever continues, returns, or occurs with significant aches, vomiting, bruising or a recent mosquito exposure.

Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, black stool, confusion, unusual sleepiness, breathing difficulty, fainting or inability to drink. Seek help as well if the person is becoming weaker or passing very little urine, regardless of whether the temperature is high or falling.

Ask what temperature pattern should prompt review, whether testing is needed, which medicines are safe, how often to check hydration, and which service to contact overnight or at weekends.
