Dengue skin changes: rash and bleeding signs

Dengue may cause a widespread or patchy rash during the feverish illness or while the person is recovering. Some people flush, while others develop easy bruising or small red or purple spots that do not fade when pressed. Skin findings can vary with skin tone and lighting, and many other conditions cause rashes. Dengue Fever is more likely to be considered when skin changes occur with fever, headache, muscle aches, joint pain or chills. A clinician may need to examine the skin and arrange testing.

Take a clear photograph in good light if the rash changes, and note when it appeared. Check for bleeding from the nose or gums, blood in vomit or stools, and new bruises. Rest and drink small amounts frequently. Avoid scratching irritated skin and avoid aspirin or ibuprofen until a clinician has assessed possible dengue. Use mosquito protection while feverish and arrange a GP Consultation if dengue is suspected.

Seek urgent medical care for rapidly spreading bruising, bleeding that does not stop, black stools, vomiting blood, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty, cold clammy skin or very little urine. A rash with facial swelling or trouble breathing may also indicate a severe allergic reaction and requires emergency help. Do not wait for the rash to become dramatic.

Ask whether the appearance fits dengue or another cause, whether testing is needed, how to check for dehydration, which products are safe on the skin, and when bruising or bleeding requires immediate review.
