Dengue red spots: what to check
Updated

Short answer
Dengue red spots may occur with dengue, yet their presence cannot confirm the diagnosis or predict how the illness will progress.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What red spots may represent
Small red spots can be part of a changing dengue rash, particularly alongside fever, headache, joint pain or muscle aches. They can also arise from other infections, medicines or skin conditions. Notice whether the spots blanch when gently pressed, whether they are spreading, and whether bruises or bleeding are appearing. A spot that remains visible under pressure is worth showing to a clinician, especially when you feel unwell. Skin inspection supports assessment but does not replace it.
Practical monitoring
Use a dated photograph to compare changes and avoid rubbing the affected skin. Drink little and often, rest, and follow advice about fever or pain relief. Avoid self-treating with aspirin or ibuprofen unless a doctor has specifically advised it. Keep a list of all medicines and supplements, because this can help a clinician assess bruising or bleeding risk.
Warning signs
Seek urgent care for bleeding from the gums or nose, blood in vomit or stool, severe stomach pain, ongoing vomiting, fainting, confusion, marked drowsiness, breathing trouble or very little urine. A fall in fever does not remove the need to watch for these symptoms. Contact a GP for unexplained spots, a spreading rash or symptoms that are not settling.
What to ask
Ask how the spots should be checked, whether testing is needed, which medicines to avoid, and how frequently you should be reviewed.

Questions people ask
Can red spots diagnose dengue?
No. A clinician uses the full symptom pattern and, when appropriate, examination or testing.
What if red spots appear after fever improves?
Monitor closely and seek advice, because important warning symptoms can occur as fever changes.
