Dengue primary symptoms

Dengue fever often begins with a sudden temperature and a general feeling of being unwell. Headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle aches, joint pain, nausea, chills or a rash may also occur. Easy bruising or bleeding is not something to monitor casually. These features can overlap with other infections, so symptoms alone cannot confirm the cause.

Rest and take frequent drinks to reduce dehydration. Note when fever began, how much you are drinking and whether you are passing urine normally. Use fever medicine only after checking that it is suitable for you, particularly if there is bruising. Contact a GP Consultation service for advice about examination, testing and follow-up.

Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding, black stools, severe weakness, fainting, confusion or breathing difficulty. Get prompt review if you cannot drink, urinate much less than usual or develop new easy bruising. A reduction in fever does not by itself mean the illness is safely over.

Ask whether the symptom pattern could fit dengue, whether testing is appropriate, which pain relief is safe, and what changes should lead you to urgent care.
