Dengue prevention and control

Dengue moves between people and mosquitoes: an infected mosquito can pass the virus when it bites another person. Control therefore combines personal protection with reducing places where mosquitoes can breed. Water that collects in containers, plant saucers, roof gutters or discarded items should be emptied or covered, and household screens should be kept in good repair.

Use an approved insect repellent as directed, cover exposed skin and use screens or air conditioning where available. Empty standing water regularly and keep storage containers tightly covered. If someone develops fever, headache, muscle aches or joint pain after possible exposure, arrange a GP Consultation and continue bite protection while unwell.

Arrange prompt assessment for fever with unusual bruising, bleeding, persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, marked drowsiness or breathing difficulty. Emergency care is needed for fainting, confusion, inability to drink or signs of shock. Chills alone do not establish dengue, but they should be considered with the complete symptom pattern and exposure history.

Ask which repellents are appropriate, how to protect children or pregnant household members, whether testing is needed, and how to respond if fever or easy bruising appears.
