What should you know about dengue looks like?

People with Dengue Fever may develop a high temperature and feel unusually tired. Headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle aches and joint pain can occur together. Some people notice nausea, reduced appetite or a skin rash as the illness changes.

These features overlap with other infections, so appearance alone cannot confirm dengue. A clinician considers the timing of symptoms, travel or mosquito exposure, examination findings and any tests that are appropriate. A rash or fever does not identify the cause on its own.

Rest, drink regularly and note when the fever, aches, rash or vomiting began. Use a thermometer if available and tell the clinician about recent travel, mosquito bites, medicines and bleeding or bruising. Do not self-treat with aspirin or anti-inflammatory pain medicines unless a clinician specifically advises it.

Get urgent care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, fainting, breathing difficulty, confusion, unusual sleepiness, cold clammy skin or very little urine. These warning signs matter whether or not the illness visibly resembles dengue.

Ask whether your symptoms fit dengue or another infection, whether testing is useful now, which pain relievers are suitable and which changes should prompt immediate review.
