Is dengue transferable between people?

Short answer
Dengue is not usually transferred directly between people; an infected mosquito passes the virus from one person to another.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main route
- A bite from a mosquito carrying dengue virus
- Casual contact
- Does not normally spread dengue
- Protection
- Prevent bites and remove nearby standing water
Can dengue transfer between people?
The cycle begins when an Aedes mosquito bites a person who has dengue virus in their blood. The mosquito can later transmit the virus when it bites another person. This is why bite prevention matters even when several people in a household feel well.
How dengue transmission works
Being near a person with dengue, shaking hands, hugging, or sharing utensils does not normally transmit the infection. The practical concern is that mosquitoes may bite someone who is infected and then bite others. Symptoms such as fever, headache, chills, muscle aches, and joint pain can occur, while easy bruising may signal a need for prompt assessment.
Read [Dengue Fever](/conditions/dengue-fever/) for broader information about the condition and its symptoms.
Steps after possible exposure
If you have recently been in a dengue-affected area, use repellent, cover exposed skin, and keep doors, windows, or sleeping areas protected with screens or nets where possible. Empty water that collects in buckets, plant saucers, tyres, and other containers near the home.
If you become unwell, continue avoiding mosquito bites while seeking advice. Tell a clinician about travel, residence, the timing of your fever, and any medicines you take. A [GP Consultation](/treatments/consultations-and-assessment/gp-consultation/) can help decide whether examination or testing is needed.
When medical help is needed
Contact a clinician promptly for fever with significant headache, body or joint pain, or unusual bruising after possible exposure. Seek urgent help for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, breathing difficulty, confusion, faintness, or trouble drinking enough fluid.
Dengue can become more serious around the time a fever settles, so monitor for new warning signs rather than relying only on temperature. Emergency symptoms need immediate assessment, particularly in children, older adults, pregnancy, or people with significant medical conditions.
Useful questions
Ask what symptoms should be monitored at home, whether your exposure history calls for testing, which pain or fever medicines to avoid, and how long to maintain careful mosquito-bite protection if dengue is suspected.

Questions people ask
Can I catch dengue from a family member?
Not ordinarily through touch, food, or shared household items. A mosquito can acquire the virus from an infected person and transmit it through a later bite.
Why avoid mosquito bites when I am sick?
A mosquito that bites an infected person may later pass the virus to someone else, so bite protection helps reduce onward transmission.
