Is dengue dangerous?

Dengue is an infection that may cause fever, headache, muscle aches and joint pain. Some people develop a more serious illness in which fluid shifts, bleeding or reduced circulation affect the body. A fever improving does not always mean the illness is over; the period around and after fever can require close attention. Easy bruising, unusual bleeding, severe belly pain, repeated vomiting, marked weakness, restlessness, or breathing difficulty are concerning changes. Rest, drink fluids regularly and keep track of symptoms. Arrange a GP Consultation if dengue is possible, particularly after travel or mosquito exposure. Tell the clinician when the fever began, what medicines you have taken and whether you can keep fluids down. Avoid aspirin or ibuprofen unless a clinician specifically advises them, because they may increase bleeding risk. Use mosquito protection while unwell so mosquitoes are less likely to pick up and spread the virus.

Seek urgent medical care for bleeding, black stools, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, confusion, fainting, cold or clammy skin, or trouble breathing. Go promptly if drinking becomes difficult or urine becomes much less frequent. Chills, muscle aches and a high Fever can occur with dengue, but the red flags above determine urgency rather than the presence of a single common symptom.
