What is a dengue ICT test?

ICT means immunochromatographic test. A small blood sample is placed on a test device, which may look for dengue antigen, antibodies, or both depending on the kit. The test can provide a quick indication, but a negative result does not always exclude dengue, particularly when testing is done early or symptoms do not fit the test window.

A clinician considers the result alongside fever, headache, chills, muscle aches, joint pain, examination findings and any recent exposure. The test does not by itself predict how severe illness will be or replace safety monitoring.

Share the test report and the date your symptoms began with a GP Consultation clinician. Follow instructions about fluids, rest, fever relief and repeat testing. Do not change medicines solely because a rapid result is negative. Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen unless specifically advised, and protect yourself from mosquito bites while dengue remains possible.

Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, unusual bruising, confusion, breathing difficulty, fainting, cold clammy skin or inability to drink. Worsening symptoms require assessment even when an ICT result is negative or unclear.
