What should you know about dengue how long after bite?

The bite of a mosquito that carries dengue may be followed by a symptom-free interval before illness begins. The bite itself may look ordinary, and many bites do not transmit dengue. If illness develops, fever can occur with headache, chills, muscle aches, or joint pain. These are presentations that can occur with dengue, but they are not specific enough to confirm it. Tell a clinician when and where the bite or possible exposure occurred, along with any travel history and the date symptoms started.

Check how you feel over the days after a possible exposure and write down fever, vomiting, pain, rash, bruising, fluid intake, and urination. Rest and drink fluids if symptoms begin. Contact a GP if fever or a dengue-like illness develops, particularly if you have recently been in an area where dengue occurs. Use mosquito protection while unwell: cover skin, use appropriate repellent, and keep sleeping areas screened where possible.

Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, black stools, fainting, confusion, difficulty breathing, extreme weakness, or reduced urine. Get prompt advice if symptoms are worsening or if you cannot keep fluids down. A visible bite mark is not required for dengue, and the absence of one does not rule it out.
