What should you know about dengue fever lab test?

A clinician may combine your symptoms, travel or mosquito exposure history, examination, and blood results. Depending on when illness began, testing may look for dengue-related material or antibodies made by your immune system. A single result may not tell the whole story, so repeat testing or a blood count may be advised. Results should be interpreted with your illness pattern rather than read in isolation.

Dengue can cause fever, headache, muscle aches, joint pain, chills, or easy bruising. These symptoms can have other causes, so a symptom link does not confirm dengue.

Tell the clinician when your fever or other symptoms started, where you have recently travelled, and which medicines or supplements you take. Drink fluids if you can, rest, and follow the testing service's instructions. Do not start aspirin, ibuprofen, or another anti-inflammatory medicine unless a clinician says it is suitable, because bleeding concerns may need consideration.

Seek urgent medical care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding from the nose or gums, blood in vomit or stool, marked drowsiness, breathing difficulty, faintness, or inability to drink. Symptoms can worsen around the time a fever settles, so improvement in temperature alone is not a reason to ignore new warning signs.
