What should you know about dengue fever headache?

Headache is a common presentation of dengue fever and may occur alongside fever, chills, muscle aches and joint pain. Pain behind the eyes can also occur. Headache alone does not establish the diagnosis because many illnesses can cause it; a clinician considers the full pattern, recent travel or mosquito exposure, examination findings and possible testing.

Dengue can change over several days. A headache that becomes intense, comes with repeated vomiting, confusion, marked drowsiness, weakness or unusual bleeding should not be managed by simply taking more pain medicine.

Rest in a cool, quiet room and drink small, frequent amounts of fluid. Keep a record of fever, headache severity and any new symptoms. Check with a clinician or pharmacist before taking pain relief, because aspirin and some anti-inflammatory medicines may be unsuitable when dengue or bleeding is possible. Do not combine products that contain the same medicine.

Get urgent care for a sudden or rapidly worsening headache, confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, easy bruising or inability to keep fluids down. Seek assessment promptly if a child, older adult, pregnant person or someone with a long-term illness has suspected dengue and develops a significant headache.
