What should you know about dengue effect on body?

Dengue commonly begins with fever and may include headache, chills, muscle aches and joint pain. The immune response can make the whole body feel sore and drained. Vomiting, poor intake or sweating can reduce fluid levels, while changes in blood vessels and blood cells can contribute to bruising or bleeding.

The phase after the fever changes can still be clinically significant. Warning signs may include severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding, unusual drowsiness or breathing difficulty. A blood test and examination help a clinician assess the pattern rather than relying on one symptom alone.

Arrange medical advice if dengue is suspected, especially if fever is ongoing or you cannot maintain fluids. Rest and drink small, frequent amounts unless a clinician has given you a fluid restriction. Keep a record of temperature, vomiting, urine output, bleeding and alertness.

Use medicines only as advised. Aspirin and some anti-inflammatory pain medicines may increase bleeding risk, so check before taking them. Prevent further mosquito bites with repellent, long clothing and screens while you are unwell.

Go to urgent care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding from the nose or gums, blood in vomit or stool, fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty, cold clammy skin or very little urine. Sudden worsening after fever begins to settle is also a reason for immediate assessment.
