Dengue day one test: what to know

Different dengue tests look for different signs of infection, and the amount detectable can change as the illness progresses. A clinician considers when fever began, recent travel or mosquito exposure, and symptoms such as headache, muscle aches, joint pain or chills. The result must be interpreted alongside the examination rather than treated as the only answer.

If the first test is negative but illness continues or changes, a clinician may recommend another test or blood monitoring. Do not use a reassuring early result as a reason to ignore warning signs.

Rest, drink regularly and note when fever started, how high it has been, vomiting, urine output, rash and any bleeding. Use paracetamol only according to professional advice or the label. Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, unusual bruising, marked drowsiness, confusion, breathing difficulty, faintness, cold clammy skin or very little urine. Dengue can become more serious while fever is changing, so urgent symptoms matter more than waiting for a result.
