What should you know about dengue breakbone fever?

The phrase describes the deep muscle and joint pain that can accompany dengue; it does not mean that bones are breaking. Chills, headache, fever, muscle aches and joint pain may occur, sometimes with nausea or a rash. Symptoms vary, and these features do not establish dengue on their own. A clinician considers the pattern, exposure history and examination.

Rest and take frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink if you can. Arrange a GP Consultation when dengue is suspected, particularly after travel or mosquito exposure. Use only pain or fever medicines recommended for you, and check before taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory medicines. Reduce mosquito exposure while ill so mosquitoes are less likely to spread infection onward.

Get urgent medical care for severe stomach pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, extreme sleepiness, confusion, fainting, breathing trouble, or difficulty drinking. Easy Bruising or worsening symptoms as the fever settles should also be assessed promptly.
