When dehydration results need attention

As fluid levels fall, the mouth and skin may feel dry and urine may become darker or less frequent. Headache, tiredness, dizziness and a fast heartbeat can follow. More serious dehydration can reduce blood flow to the brain and kidneys, causing confusion, fainting or very little urine. Heat Exhaustion, Gastroenteritis and urinary illness can all involve fluid loss, but the underlying cause still needs attention.

Stop strenuous activity, move to a cool place and take frequent small sips of water or oral rehydration fluid if you are alert and able to swallow. Rest and monitor urination, dizziness and mental alertness. If vomiting or diarrhoea continues, contact a clinician because replacing fluid does not remove the trigger. People on fluid restrictions should follow their personalised plan rather than drinking large amounts.

Seek emergency care for confusion, fainting, inability to drink, severe weakness, breathing difficulty, chest pain or very little urine. Prompt assessment is needed for persistent dizziness, repeated vomiting, severe abdominal or side pain, fever, blood in stool or urine, or suspected Heat Exhaustion. Delayed care can allow the cause of fluid loss to worsen.

Ask what caused the dehydration, whether kidney function or electrolytes should be checked, and which warning signs should bring you back for care.
