Dehydration remedies: what to know

How the structures involved in Dehydration differ from normal

Short answer

Useful dehydration remedies are frequent small sips, appropriate oral rehydration fluid, rest and treatment of the underlying fluid loss.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Best habit
Sip regularly rather than waiting until very thirsty.
Extra caution
Heart and kidney conditions may require individual fluid advice.

Choosing a remedy

Mild fluid loss may improve with water and fluids taken regularly. Oral rehydration solutions contain water and salts in a balance intended to replace losses from vomiting or diarrhoea; follow the packet directions and do not make the mixture stronger. Sports drinks, very sugary drinks and alcohol are not interchangeable with oral rehydration fluid. Dehydration caused by Heat Exhaustion needs cooling as well as fluids. Kidney or heart conditions can change what is safe.

Steps at home

Rest in a cool place and take small sips every few minutes. If nausea settles, increase gradually. Eat light foods when wanted, and replace fluids after sweating or loose stools. Treat the likely trigger: seek advice for ongoing diarrhoea, vomiting, fever or painful urination rather than relying on fluids alone. Avoid salt tablets and unapproved herbal products. A pharmacist or clinician can help choose an oral rehydration product if you take regular medicines.

When home remedies are not enough

Seek urgent care for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, inability to swallow, repeated vomiting, very little urine or worsening dizziness. Get prompt advice for dark urine that persists, blood in vomit or stool, severe pain, high fever or signs of Heat Exhaustion. Children, older adults and people with long-term conditions may become unwell quickly.

Questions to bring

Ask which fluid suits your symptoms, whether your medicines need review during vomiting or diarrhoea, and how to prevent another episode.

Questions people ask

Is water enough for dehydration?

It may be suitable for mild fluid loss, while vomiting or diarrhoea may call for an oral rehydration solution.

Can I make an oral rehydration drink stronger?

No. Follow the product directions; an overly concentrated mixture can be harmful.
