Dehydration and numb hands: what to know

Fluid loss can cause dizziness, weakness, dry mouth and a fast heartbeat. Numbness or pins and needles may occur alongside dehydration when rapid breathing, heat illness or changes in body salts are present. However, hand numbness can also arise from pressure on a nerve, migraine, diabetes, medication effects or a neurological emergency. Gastroenteritis and Heat Exhaustion can cause fluid loss, while urinary symptoms may point to another problem.

Stop strenuous activity and sit or lie in a cool place. Sip water or an oral rehydration drink if you are awake and able to swallow. Do not drive while dizzy or numb. Note when the sensation began, whether one or both hands are affected, and whether it is spreading. Avoid taking salt tablets or changing prescribed medicines without medical advice. If symptoms do not settle after rest and fluids, arrange prompt assessment.

Call emergency services for sudden one-sided numbness, facial drooping, trouble speaking, severe headache, chest pain, breathing difficulty, collapse or confusion. Seek urgent care for worsening weakness, inability to walk, repeated vomiting, very little urine or suspected Heat Exhaustion. These signs require assessment even if you also feel thirsty.

Ask whether your symptoms could reflect a salt imbalance, nerve problem or medication effect, and whether blood tests, urine testing or neurological examination are needed.
