Can dehydration cause dizziness?

Short answer
Dehydration can cause dizziness because reduced body fluid may lower blood pressure and reduce blood flow to the brain.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why dizziness can happen
You may feel light-headed when standing, unsteady, weak, or as though the room is moving. Fluid loss from sweating, fever, vomiting or diarrhoea can contribute, and dizziness may be worse after standing suddenly. Dehydration is more plausible when thirst, dry mouth, darker urine, tiredness or reduced urination occur together. Spinning sensations, fainting, chest symptoms, new weakness, or a severe headache need a broader assessment rather than being attributed to fluids alone.
What to do safely
Sit or lie down until the sensation passes, rise slowly, and avoid driving or climbing while dizzy. Take small, regular sips of water; after vomiting or diarrhoea, an oral rehydration solution can replace lost water and salts when used as directed. Move to a cool place after heat exposure. [Gastroenteritis](/conditions/gastroenteritis/) and [Heat Exhaustion](/conditions/heat-exhaustion/) are possible settings for fluid loss. Do not delay care if you cannot drink.
When to seek care
Get urgent help for fainting, confusion, severe drowsiness, trouble speaking, one-sided weakness, severe headache, chest pain, breathing difficulty, or inability to keep fluids down. Seek prompt advice if dizziness keeps returning, lasts after drinking, or comes with very little urine, a racing heartbeat, fever, painful urination, or severe side pain. [Dehydration](/conditions/dehydration/) may need treatment, while [Kidney Stones](/conditions/kidney-stones/) or a [Urinary Tract Infection](/conditions/urinary-tract-infection/) can require different care.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms suggest dehydration or another cause, how to replace fluids safely, and whether blood pressure, blood tests, or a urine test would help. Tell the clinician when dizziness began, what triggers it, how much you have drunk, and whether illness, heat, medicines, or pregnancy may be relevant.
