What should you know about dehydration after alcohol?

Short answer
Dehydration after alcohol can result from increased urination, vomiting, sweating, and poor fluid intake, so recovery requires gradual fluids and attention to warning signs.

Why alcohol can leave you dry
Alcohol can make the kidneys pass more urine, while nausea, vomiting, heat, dancing, or simply forgetting to drink can add to fluid loss. The next-day headache, thirst, dry mouth, weakness, and dark urine may reflect dehydration, alcohol effects, poor sleep, or a combination. Alcohol does not explain every symptom: severe abdominal pain, fever, painful urination, or persistent vomiting may point to another condition such as gastroenteritis or a urinary problem.
How to recover
Sip water or an appropriate oral rehydration drink over time, especially if your stomach feels unsettled. Eat a light meal if you can tolerate it, rest in a cool place, and avoid more alcohol until you feel well. Do not drive while alcohol may still affect you, and check with a pharmacist before taking pain medicines because alcohol and some medicines can irritate the stomach or strain the liver. Avoid exercising in heat while dizzy or weak.
When to seek care
Call emergency services for difficulty waking, slow or irregular breathing, seizure, severe confusion, collapse, blue or clammy skin, or repeated vomiting with inability to keep fluids down. Seek urgent medical advice for fainting, severe weakness, very little urine, blood in vomit or stool, severe pain, or worsening symptoms after drinking. Heat exposure can add risk, particularly when dizziness, heavy sweating, or confusion is present.
Questions for your doctor
Could my symptoms be dehydration or alcohol poisoning? Do vomiting, medicines, or a health condition change which fluids or medicines are safe? When should I be checked for kidney or liver problems?

Questions people ask
Does water alone always fix dehydration after alcohol?
Not always. Ongoing vomiting or heavy fluid loss may require advice about electrolyte replacement and treatment of the cause.
Can a hangover symptom be something more serious?
Yes. Confusion, collapse, abnormal breathing, or inability to wake is an emergency rather than a routine hangover.
