What should you know about mastitis?

During breastfeeding, milk stasis, pressure on the breast, or nipple damage can contribute to inflammation. Infection may also develop, but inflammation and infection are not identical. A breast lump or breast pain can have several causes; a breast lump is a common presentation of benign breast conditions as well as other problems, so it should not be self-diagnosed. Symptoms may affect one breast and can include redness, tenderness, swelling, chills, or feeling unwell.

Continue breastfeeding or expressing milk if you are able, using a comfortable position and avoiding forceful massage. Rest, drink fluids, and use a cool pack for comfort. A clinician can check whether antibiotics or another treatment is appropriate, especially when symptoms are worsening or do not settle. A lactation consultation can help identify attachment, feeding-pattern, or pumping issues that may be adding pressure.

Seek prompt medical advice for feverishness, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, marked swelling, or feeling increasingly ill. Arrange an assessment if symptoms do not begin improving, recur, or leave a persistent lump. Urgent care is appropriate if you feel faint, confused, or unable to keep fluids down.

Ask whether the findings fit inflammatory mastitis, infection, or an abscess; whether you should continue feeding; and what changes should trigger reassessment.
