Deep whooping cough: what to know

Whooping cough, also called pertussis, is a bacterial infection of the airways. It may begin like a mild cold with a runny nose and cough, then develop into repeated coughing fits. A person may gasp or make a whooping noise when breathing in after a fit, vomit from coughing, or feel exhausted. Babies may have breathing pauses or feed poorly without a classic whoop. The illness spreads through respiratory droplets, so early assessment matters when a persistent or worsening cough affects a household.

Arrange a medical review, especially for a baby, pregnant person, older adult or anyone with a long-term health condition. Antibiotic treatment may be offered to treat the infection and reduce spread when started at an appropriate stage. Rest, small drinks and avoiding smoke can make coughing easier to manage. Cover coughs, wash hands and ask the clinician when work, school or childcare can safely resume. Check whether household contacts need advice or preventive treatment.

Call emergency services for pauses in breathing, blue or grey lips, severe breathing difficulty, collapse, confusion or inability to keep fluids down. Seek urgent assessment for a baby with repeated coughs, poor feeding, fewer wet nappies or unusual sleepiness. Coughing blood, chest pain or a sudden deterioration also needs prompt care.

Ask whether testing is needed, whether antibiotic treatment is suitable, how long infection precautions should continue, which contacts need advice, and whether vaccinations are up to date.
