Deep stretch marks removal: what to know

A stretch mark is a dermal scar created when skin stretches or changes quickly. Early marks may be red, violet, or brown, while mature marks tend to be pale and slightly depressed. The colour and texture can respond differently, so removal is usually a process of reducing contrast and irregularity rather than returning skin to its original state.

Results depend on whether marks are new or mature, their depth and location, your skin tone, healing pattern, and the reason the skin stretched. New marks can also develop if rapid growth or weight change continues.

Start with a dermatology assessment. The clinician can confirm the diagnosis, check for medicines or conditions that affect healing, and set a realistic endpoint. Moisturiser can reduce dryness and friction, but it does not remove established scars.

Procedural choices may include Microneedling, Fractional Laser Treatment, RF Microneedling, or Carboxytherapy. They work through controlled skin injury, heat, or other stimulation to encourage remodelling. Treatment plans vary, and temporary redness, swelling, pigment change, crusting, or sensitivity can occur. Follow sun protection and aftercare instructions closely, and avoid self-treating with strong acids or unregulated lightening products.

Seek assessment if marks appeared suddenly without an obvious growth or weight change, spread rapidly, or occur with easy bruising, muscle weakness, or prolonged steroid use. Contact a clinician for pain, bleeding, ulceration, infection signs, or severe itch. A new breast lump, nipple change, or discharge needs a breast-focused assessment rather than cosmetic treatment.

Ask which feature is most treatable—colour, width, or indentation—what improvement is realistic, whether your skin is prone to pigment changes, how recovery affects work or exercise, and how to space sessions safely.
