Short answer

Deep sleep can make snoring louder because relaxed throat tissues narrow the airway, but persistent snoring may need assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Mechanism
Relaxed upper-airway tissues vibrate as air moves through.
Key clue
Pauses, gasping and daytime sleepiness need assessment.
Safety
Do not drive when sleepiness makes staying awake difficult.

What snoring may indicate

Snoring is caused by airflow making tissues in the nose, mouth or throat vibrate. Nasal blockage from allergic rhinitis or chronic sinusitis can contribute. Snoring is also a common feature of obstructive sleep apnoea, where the airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep. Clues include witnessed pauses, gasping, restless sleep, morning headaches, dry mouth and daytime sleepiness. Snoring alone cannot establish the cause.

Steps that may help

Keep the nose clear if congestion is present and try sleeping on your side. Avoid alcohol or sedating medicines near bedtime unless a clinician has advised them. Keep a record of snoring, pauses and daytime tiredness; a partner's observations or a short recording can help at review. If weight is contributing, ask about a suitable weight management programme rather than attempting a restrictive plan without guidance.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment for loud or frequent snoring, especially with witnessed breathing pauses, choking sounds, morning headaches or sleepiness that affects work, study or driving. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty while awake, chest pain, fainting or blue-grey lips. Do not drive if you are struggling to stay awake.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your symptoms suggest obstructive sleep apnoea, whether nasal treatment is appropriate, and whether a sleep test is needed. Discuss medicines, alcohol, nasal blockage and practical ways to improve sleep position.
