Deep chest cough

A cough that feels low in the chest may bring up mucus or cause soreness from repeated force. Acute Bronchitis and a Common Cold can irritate the breathing tubes for a limited period. Asthma may cause cough with tightness or variable breathing, while acid reflux can trigger cough without obvious chest mucus. Allergic Rhinitis may cause drainage from the nose into the throat. Bronchiectasis and Chronic Cough need medical assessment when symptoms persist or recur. Bronchiolitis is mainly a concern in young children.

Drink fluids regularly, rest, and avoid cigarette smoke, vaping aerosol, dust, and strong scents. Warm drinks may soothe an irritated throat. If mucus is present, gentle movement and upright positioning can make coughing more comfortable. Do not start antibiotics or combine cough medicines without checking that they suit your age, medicines, and health conditions. Note when the cough began, whether it is dry or productive, and any triggers or fever.

Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, sudden chest pain, or coughing up more than small streaks of blood. Arrange medical review for a cough that is worsening, lasts beyond the expected illness, repeatedly returns, or comes with fever, wheezing, weight change, or night sweats. Children who are struggling to breathe, feeding poorly, or unusually sleepy need prompt assessment.

Ask whether your chest sounds clear, whether mucus or reflux could be contributing, and which treatments are appropriate. Mention smoking exposure, allergies, asthma history, and every medicine you take.
