Short answer

A decrease in urinary frequency means you are passing urine less often than is usual for you, and the change should be considered alongside fluid intake and other symptoms.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Track
Timing, drinks, urine amount, colour, and related symptoms
Do not self-treat
Avoid leftover antibiotics or medicines that change urine production

Possible explanations

You may urinate less after drinking less, sweating heavily, vomiting, having diarrhoea, or losing access to fluids. Some medicines can alter urine production. A blockage or irritation affecting the bladder or prostate can also change the pattern; prostatitis and benign prostatic hyperplasia are examples of prostate conditions that may affect urinary symptoms. Kidney disease can reduce urine output, particularly when swelling, tiredness, nausea, or breathlessness are also present. Reduced frequency alone does not identify one diagnosis.

What you can do now

Notice when the change began, how much you drink, and whether each urine is a small or usual amount. Check for dark urine, thirst, dizziness, burning, urgency, weak flow, fever, or pain. Drink regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict fluids, and do not take leftover antibiotics or diuretics. A clinician may review medicines, examine you, and arrange urine or blood tests. Diabetes, including prediabetes and type 1 or type 2 diabetes, can affect thirst and urination patterns.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help if you cannot pass urine, have severe lower-abdominal or back pain, confusion, fainting, marked weakness, or difficulty breathing. Prompt assessment is also sensible when very little urine follows fluid loss, or when reduced urination comes with fever, blood in the urine, repeated vomiting, or new swelling. Arrange a routine appointment if the change persists, recurs, or comes with a weak stream or incomplete emptying.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your fluid intake or medicines could explain the change, whether urine and kidney tests are appropriate, and which symptoms should trigger same-day care. Mention any prostate symptoms, diabetes symptoms, recent illness, or fluid loss.

Questions people ask

Is urinating less often always a kidney problem?

No. Fluid loss, reduced drinking, medicines, bladder problems, and prostate conditions can also change frequency.

When is reduced urination urgent?

Urgent help is needed for inability to pass urine, severe pain, confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty, or very little urine after major fluid loss.
