What should you know about Debrox and swimmer's ear?

Swimmer's ear, also called otitis externa, is irritation or infection of the skin lining the outer ear canal. Water trapped after swimming, scratching, earbuds or other irritation can contribute. Earache, tenderness when the outer ear is moved, itching, swelling or discharge may occur, and hearing can seem muffled if the canal narrows. Debrox contains an earwax-softening ingredient and may be unsuitable when the eardrum is not intact or the ear is painful, inflamed or draining. Ear symptoms can have several causes, so a product intended for wax should not be used to self-treat suspected infection without advice.

Stop putting cotton buds, fingers, oils or unrecommended drops into the ear. Keep the ear dry while symptoms are present and avoid swimming until a clinician advises that it is reasonable. Read the product label and ask a pharmacist or GP before using Debrox, particularly if you have ear tubes, previous ear surgery, a perforated eardrum or significant pain. A GP consultation can distinguish wax from outer-ear inflammation and identify whether prescribed drops or another approach is needed. Do not share ear drops.

Arrange prompt medical care for worsening ear pain, discharge, fever, swelling around the ear, marked tenderness or new hearing loss. Seek urgent help if severe pain is accompanied by swelling spreading into the face, severe dizziness, weakness or feeling very unwell. People with diabetes or a weakened immune system should seek advice early because outer-ear infections may need closer monitoring.

Ask whether the eardrum can be seen safely, whether wax is present, which drops are appropriate, how long to keep the ear dry, and what symptoms mean treatment is not working. Mention swimming, ear devices, recent cleaning and any previous ear problems.
