How DCIS can present

The imaging finding may be a cluster or pattern of tiny calcium deposits called calcifications. Imaging alone cannot confirm DCIS, so a breast biopsy is used to examine cells and tissue under a microscope.

When DCIS causes no symptom, the absence of a lump does not make the mammogram finding unimportant. It reflects the way abnormal cells can remain within milk ducts and be visible through associated calcifications before they create a palpable change.

Some people with DCIS do notice a lump or nipple discharge, but these are not specific to DCIS. A breast change can arise from benign conditions or other breast disease, and diagnosis depends on clinical examination, suitable imaging, and tissue sampling when indicated.

Attend any recommended follow-up imaging and take earlier breast images if they were performed elsewhere. The radiology team may request targeted mammogram views or another imaging test before deciding whether a biopsy is needed.

If biopsy confirms DCIS, discuss its grade and extent with a breast specialist. Planning may include lumpectomy or mastectomy, with radiotherapy or hormone therapy considered according to the operation, pathology findings, overall health, and personal priorities.

Arrange a medical assessment for a new breast or underarm lump, bloody or clear discharge from one nipple, new nipple inversion, persistent focal breast pain, skin dimpling, or redness that does not settle. These changes do not establish a diagnosis, but they should not be ignored.

Seek urgent care for a breast that becomes rapidly swollen and red with fever or marked illness, or for severe symptoms such as breathing difficulty or fainting. If a screening service recalls you after a mammogram, follow the appointment instructions even when you feel well.

You could ask what the mammogram showed, whether previous images changed the interpretation, which biopsy method is proposed, when results will be discussed, and who will coordinate the next visit. After a DCIS diagnosis, ask whether invasion was seen and how imaging extent compares with pathology.
