DCIS found at multiple sites

The phrase describes where disease is located, not whether it has invaded nearby breast tissue. A pathology report must be read alongside imaging to clarify whether the sites lie in one segment or in widely separated regions.

Separate clusters of calcifications on mammography can raise concern for DCIS in more than one location. Doctors may sample different areas because one biopsy represents only the tissue taken from that particular site.

The reports should identify which breast and region each sample came from, its grade, and whether hormone receptors were tested. After surgery, examination of the specimen clarifies the distance between involved areas and whether abnormal cells reach a cut edge.

Treatment planning considers the combined span of disease rather than judging each spot alone. Breast-conserving surgery may remain possible when the sites can be removed together with clear margins. Widely separated disease can make mastectomy a more practical option, with reconstruction discussed separately if desired.

If lumpectomy is chosen, radiotherapy may be recommended afterward. For hormone-receptor-positive DCIS, hormone therapy can be considered based on its benefits, side effects, and your health history. Decisions should also account for earlier breast procedures and your priorities.

Contact the breast clinic promptly about a newly felt mass, spontaneous bloody discharge, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, or swelling that is new or worsening. Such findings need an examination and may lead to targeted imaging.

Following a biopsy or operation, get urgent help for bleeding that does not settle with the pressure advised by your team, quickly expanding breast swelling, fever with spreading redness, breathing difficulty, or chest pain.

Request a clear explanation of where every sampled site sits on the breast map and whether all suspicious areas were biopsied. Ask whether the sites can be removed in one operation, what might require another procedure, and which pathology findings will determine care after surgery.
