DCDA Twins and Normal Delivery

DCDA twins have separate placentas and separate amniotic sacs. Ultrasound findings, the babies’ growth, their positions, your health and the maternity unit’s expertise all shape the birth discussion. A head-down presenting twin can make vaginal birth more feasible, but the second twin’s position may change the plan.

Twin labour is monitored closely because the babies can respond differently during contractions. The team may discuss assisted birth or caesarean birth if concerns arise, and the plan can change during labour.

Discuss the planned place of birth, monitoring, pain relief, induction and what would prompt a caesarean section. Ask how the team will check each baby after the first birth and who will be present for newborn care.

Attend growth scans and antenatal reviews, carry your maternity records and learn the unit’s instructions for contacting them when labour begins or waters break. Arrange practical support for recovery and feeding two babies.

Call urgently for vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe headache, visual changes, sudden swelling, reduced movement of either baby or feeling seriously unwell. Use emergency services for heavy bleeding, collapse or severe breathing difficulty.

Ask whether both babies are currently head-down, how monitoring will work, when induction might be discussed, and what circumstances would favour caesarean birth.
