Short answer

A blood test examines a small sample to assess blood cells, organs, hormones, infection markers, or other health signals.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Sample
Usually a small sample from a vein in the arm.
Preparation
Some tests require fasting; check before attending.
Interpretation
Results are interpreted with symptoms and medical history.

The short answer

A blood test examines a small sample to assess blood cells, organs, hormones, infection markers, or other health signals. The exact test matters: a full blood count looks at blood cells, while other tests assess glucose, kidney function, liver function, or antibodies. Results need to be read alongside your symptoms, examination, medicines, and medical history.

What the result can mean

A result outside the laboratory range does not automatically confirm a condition. Illness, hydration, recent exercise, medicines, pregnancy, and the timing of collection can affect findings. A clinician may compare the result with earlier tests or arrange a repeat sample. Blood work may help investigate tiredness, fever, inflammation, anaemia, or changes in kidney and liver function; it is one part of an assessment, not a diagnosis by itself.

How to prepare

Ask whether you need to fast, take usual medicines, or attend at a particular time. Drink water unless you have been told to restrict fluids, and tell the clinician about medicines, supplements, allergies, pregnancy, and a tendency to feel faint. Wear clothing that allows easy access to your arm. After collection, keep pressure on the spot as advised and mention persistent bleeding or increasing swelling.

When to seek care

Contact the requesting clinician if you do not understand a result or if symptoms continue despite a reassuring test. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, sudden confusion, or rapidly worsening illness. A blood test may be used while investigating conditions such as [Anaemia](/conditions/anaemia/) or [Chronic Kidney Disease](/conditions/chronic-kidney-disease/), but treatment depends on the complete clinical picture.

Questions for your doctor

Which blood tests were requested, and what question is each one answering? Do I need preparation or a repeat sample? When should I expect the result, and which findings need follow-up? Could my medicines or supplements affect the interpretation?

Questions people ask

Does a blood test diagnose every illness?

Can I take my usual medicine before testing?

Follow the instructions from the requesting clinician; do not stop prescribed medicine without advice.
