What should you know about dating scan radiology?

Ultrasound creates moving images from sound waves rather than ionising radiation. The imaging professional assesses the uterus and pregnancy, selects useful views, and records measurements. A radiology report translates those observations into findings for the clinician caring for you. The report may describe what is visible, what cannot yet be confirmed, and whether follow-up imaging is appropriate. Image quality depends on timing, position and the route used for the examination.

Read the report with your maternity clinician, who can relate it to your dates, symptoms and medical history. Ask about unfamiliar terms such as gestational sac, embryo, cardiac activity or crown-rump measurement. Keep the report for future appointments. Radiology describes images; it does not replace clinical assessment or screening discussions, including whether a nuchal translucency scan is suitable.

Seek prompt medical care for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided pain, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, fever, or marked weakness. These warning symptoms require assessment even if imaging has been completed. Contact your clinician if a report recommends follow-up and you are unsure how soon it should happen.
