What should you know about dating scan procedure?

A trained sonographer explains the examination and asks about your dates and symptoms. For an abdominal scan, gel is placed on the lower abdomen and a probe is moved over the skin. An internal ultrasound uses a slim covered probe and is discussed with you beforehand; you can ask questions or pause. The clinician records the pregnancy location, visible development and measurements that help estimate gestational age.

Tell the sonographer if you feel discomfort, need a break, or have concerns about privacy. Afterward, ask when and how the report will be shared and whether follow-up imaging is planned. A dating scan may not provide a final answer when it is very early or the view is limited, so follow the review plan given by your care team.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided pain, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, fever, or sudden deterioration. Do not wait for a routine result if these symptoms occur. If the examination causes ongoing pain or bleeding, contact the service that performed it or your maternity team.

Ask: Which scan approach is planned? What measurements were taken? Is the pregnancy in the uterus? When will I receive the report, and is another appointment needed?
