Dating scan during pregnancy: what to expect

The sonographer may assess pregnancy location, whether development matches the expected stage, and whether a heartbeat can be seen at that stage. Measurements can adjust the estimated due date when menstrual dates are uncertain or cycles are irregular. Early scans may be performed through the vagina or over the abdomen, depending on timing and clinical need. A scan may not answer every question, and a repeat scan can be recommended when visibility or development is too early to assess clearly.

Follow instructions about drinking fluids, bringing records, and taking regular medicines. Tell the team about bleeding, pain, previous pregnancy complications, or uncertainty about your last period. Ask what was seen, how the estimated date was calculated, and whether another scan is needed. A dating scan differs from a Nuchal Translucency Scan, which has a separate purpose and timing.

Do not wait for a scheduled scan if you have heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, dizziness, fever, or feel suddenly unwell. Contact your maternity team or urgent services promptly because early-pregnancy symptoms can need assessment.
