Dark yellow urine when sick

Fever and sweating increase fluid loss, while nausea, sore throat, or tiredness may make you drink less. Vomiting and diarrhoea remove additional water and salts, so urine may become darker and stronger-smelling. This pattern can occur with many short illnesses and does not identify the cause by itself.

Other changes matter. Burning or urgency suggests urinary irritation; severe muscle pain with very dark urine, yellow eyes, or pale stools needs a different assessment. Certain medicines and supplements can also alter the shade, so record anything started recently.

Take small, frequent sips of water or an appropriate rehydration drink if you have been losing fluid. Rest, follow the treatment plan for the illness, and monitor how often you pass urine. If you have a fluid restriction, kidney disease, heart disease, or are pregnant, ask a clinician about safe fluid amounts rather than changing intake on your own.

Arrange prompt care for ongoing vomiting or diarrhoea, high fever, painful urination, side or back pain, yellow skin or eyes, or urine that remains very dark. Seek urgent help if you are confused, faint, extremely weak, unable to drink, or passing very little urine.

Tell your doctor when the illness and colour change began, how much you are drinking, and whether fluid loss is occurring. Ask whether you need urine testing, blood tests, or a change to any current medicine.
