Dark yellow urine and symptoms to watch

After sweating, exercise, fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, or limited drinking, urine may look darker because it contains less water. Mild thirst without other illness may fit this explanation. Heat exhaustion can cause headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness, and heavy sweating as fluid and salt are lost.

Burning urination, urgency, abdominal or back pain, fever, or blood suggests a urinary problem rather than a colour change alone. Yellow eyes or skin, pale stools, itching, nausea, or brown urine can occur when bile processing is affected. Hepatitis A and hepatitis B are possible causes of liver inflammation, but a urine shade cannot identify them.

Note the exact shade, when it began, how often you urinate, and whether pain, fever, vomiting, or skin and eye colour changed. If you feel well and can drink, take fluids regularly and watch for improvement. Arrange a medical appointment if symptoms persist, recur, or do not have an obvious explanation. A clinician can decide whether urine or blood tests are useful.

Seek urgent care for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, severe abdominal or back pain, high fever, repeated vomiting, yellow eyes or skin with worsening illness, inability to keep fluids down, or inability to pass urine. Prompt advice is appropriate for brown or red urine, especially with pain or fever.
