Dark yellow urine despite drinking water

Water intake does not always replace fluid lost through sweat, fever, vomiting, or diarrhoea. A hot climate or active day can leave urine concentrated even when you are drinking. [Dehydration](/conditions/dehydration/) can therefore remain possible, but colour is not a measuring tool by itself. Vitamins and medicines may add a strong yellow tone. Brownish urine with jaundice or pale stools needs attention because liver inflammation, including [Hepatitis A](/conditions/hepatitis-a/) and [Hepatitis B](/conditions/hepatitis-b/), can affect urine.

Use thirst, urine volume, and your overall symptoms together rather than chasing a particular shade. Drink steadily and rest somewhere cool after heat or exertion. Review labels for vitamins, supplements, and medicines with a pharmacist. Seek a routine medical appointment when the colour persists, recurs without an obvious trigger, or comes with burning, urgency, pain, fever, or a change in urine volume. Testing can separate pigment changes from illness.

Arrange urgent assessment for fainting, confusion, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, inability to pass urine, very little urine, yellow skin or eyes, blood, severe pain, or tea- or cola-coloured urine. Headache, dizziness, nausea, and worsening weakness after heat exposure may be [Heat Exhaustion](/conditions/heat-exhaustion/) and should not be ignored.
