Dark yellow urine all the time: what to know

Urine becomes deeper yellow when it contains less water. Heat, sweating, vomiting, diarrhoea, or simply going many hours without drinking can concentrate it; read more about [Dehydration](/conditions/dehydration/). B-complex vitamins and some medicines can also alter colour. Dark urine with yellowing of the eyes or skin, pale stools, nausea, or discomfort under the right ribs deserves medical review because liver inflammation, including [Hepatitis A](/conditions/hepatitis-a/) or [Hepatitis B](/conditions/hepatitis-b/), can change urine colour. The colour alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice whether the colour changes after regular fluids and rest in a cool place. Do not force large amounts of water quickly. Review new vitamins, supplements, or medicines with a pharmacist, and do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice. Record when the colour appears, its shade, your fluid intake, and any pain, fever, smell, or change in frequency. If it persists despite ordinary hydration, arrange a primary-care assessment; a urine sample and blood tests may help clarify the cause.

Seek prompt medical care for dark urine with yellow skin or eyes, severe weakness, confusion, fainting, repeated vomiting, marked thirst with very little urine, or inability to keep fluids down. Burning, fever, back or side pain, blood, or a tea-coloured appearance should also be assessed promptly.
