What should you know about dark yellow thick urine?

Dark yellow thick urine is often concentrated because you have not taken in enough fluid, but persistent changes or other symptoms need medical assessment. Urine can look thicker when it is more concentrated, especially after sweating, exercise, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, or a long period without drinking. A strong smell can occur for the same reason. Dark urine is not itself a diagnosis, and the appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Arrange a primary-care appointment if the urine stays dark despite drinking normally, repeatedly becomes thick-looking, or comes with urinary, abdominal, or liver-related symptoms. A clinician may ask for a urine sample and review medicines, supplements, recent illness, and fluid loss.

Seek urgent medical help if you are confused, faint, unusually drowsy, unable to keep fluids down, or passing very little or no urine. Get prompt assessment for dark urine with severe weakness, severe abdominal or back pain, fever with shaking chills, blood or cola-coloured urine, or yellow skin or eyes. These combinations can signal significant fluid loss or another condition needing timely treatment.
