Dark yellow burning urine: what should you know?

Reduced fluid intake or fluid loss can deepen urine colour and make urination feel more irritating. Burning may also occur with a urinary infection, inflammation, a sexually transmitted infection, or irritation from soaps and other products. The symptom pattern matters: urgency, passing urine often, lower-abdominal discomfort, fever, side pain, discharge or blood can change which tests are useful. Dark urine with yellow eyes is a separate warning pattern that can suggest bilirubin-related illness.

Drink fluids normally if you are able and do not have a fluid restriction. Avoid scented washes around the genital area and do not use leftover antibiotics, since the correct treatment depends on the cause. Arrange a medical review if burning lasts, returns, or comes with urgency or frequent urination. A urine sample may be tested; sexual health testing may be appropriate when there is discharge or a possible exposure.

Seek urgent care for fever with chills, pain in the back or side, vomiting, visible blood, inability to pass urine, severe pain, confusion, or feeling faint. Pregnancy, a child with these symptoms, or a person with a weakened immune system calls for prompt clinical advice rather than waiting for symptoms to settle.
