What Should You Know About Dark Yellow Bubbly Urine?

Dark yellow urine commonly reflects more concentrated urine, which can happen after sweating, drinking less than usual, vomiting, or diarrhoea. Bubbles may appear briefly when urine hits the water with force, especially after holding your urine for a while. They can also be easier to notice when the toilet water contains cleaning product.

Look at the pattern rather than one visit to the bathroom. Urine that stays very dark despite drinking normally, becomes tea-coloured or brown, or is accompanied by yellowing of the eyes or skin can point to a problem that needs review. Dark urine can occur with liver inflammation, including hepatitis A or hepatitis B, although appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

If you feel well, drink fluids regularly and observe the next several bathroom visits. Pale yellow urine is a useful general sign of hydration, but do not force large amounts of water quickly. Seek urgent help for severe weakness, confusion, fainting, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, severe abdominal pain, or yellow skin or eyes with dark urine. These symptoms can signal significant dehydration or a liver-related illness and should not be judged by colour alone.
