How to collect a dark urine sample

Colour gives a useful clue but cannot show whether pigment comes from concentrated urine, blood, bile, medicines, infection, or another source. A laboratory can examine the sample for blood cells, protein, infection markers, bilirubin-related pigment, and other findings. The result is more useful when the clinician knows when the colour changed and whether it persists.

Tell the clinician about fluid intake, fever, exercise, new medicines, supplements, foods, menstrual or genital bleeding, and symptoms such as pain, burning, yellow eyes, pale stool, or reduced urination.

Follow the clinic's instructions. Usually, wash your hands, clean the genital area as directed, begin urinating into the toilet, then collect the midstream urine in the sterile container without touching its inside. Close it firmly, label it as instructed, and return it within the advised time. Do not add water or another substance. If you cannot provide a sample immediately, ask the clinic how to store it rather than guessing.

Seek urgent help for dark urine with severe pain, fever and shaking, confusion, fainting, repeated vomiting, yellowing, very little urine, or severe weakness. Visible blood, new swelling, or cola-coloured urine after heavy exercise needs prompt medical advice. Ask which container and collection method to use, when the sample should arrive, whether repeat testing is needed, and which result would lead to blood tests or imaging.
