Short answer

Muscle breakdown can make urine brown or cola-coloured because myoglobin released from injured muscle is filtered by the kidneys.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How muscle injury changes urine

Hard or unfamiliar exercise, crush injuries, prolonged pressure on a muscle, seizures, or severe heat stress can damage muscle cells. Myoglobin from those cells may enter the bloodstream and pass into urine, changing it to a dark brown or cola shade. Muscle breakdown often comes with muscle pain, tenderness, swelling, weakness, or unusual tiredness, although the pattern varies. The kidneys must clear the breakdown products, so this combination should not be dismissed as ordinary post-exercise soreness.

What to do

Stop strenuous activity and seek prompt medical assessment if dark urine follows intense exercise, injury, heat, or prolonged immobility. Tell the clinician what happened, when the colour changed, which muscles hurt, and how much you have urinated. Assessment may include urine and blood tests. Avoid further exertion and avoid taking extra medicines or supplements for pain unless a clinician advises they are suitable.

When to seek urgent help

Go to urgent care for cola-coloured urine with severe muscle pain, weakness, swelling, reduced urine, dizziness, fainting, confusion, or vomiting. Seek immediate help after a major injury or heat exposure, particularly if symptoms are progressing. Rapid assessment can identify muscle injury and protect kidney function.

Questions to ask

Ask whether muscle injury is a concern, which urine and blood tests are needed, how much activity is safe, and which changes in urine output require immediate review. Mention recent exercise intensity, trauma, heat, seizures, and all medicines or supplements.

Questions people ask

Can exercise-related dark urine be muscle breakdown?

It can be, especially after unusually intense exercise or heat exposure and when muscle pain, weakness, or reduced urine is present. Prompt assessment is appropriate.

Should I keep exercising to see if it settles?

No. Stop strenuous activity and arrange assessment when dark urine follows heavy exertion, injury, or heat, particularly with muscle symptoms.
