Dark urine and liver failure: warning signs to know

The liver processes bile pigments. When bile handling is disrupted, extra pigment can leave through urine, making it dark or brown, while stools may become unusually pale. Itching, nausea, poor appetite, tiredness, discomfort under the right ribs, and yellowing of the eyes or skin may occur with liver or bile-duct illness. Dehydration and some medicines can also darken urine, so the appearance does not establish liver failure. Liver failure is a serious medical state diagnosed from symptoms, examination, and blood tests rather than colour alone.

If the change is new or unexplained, arrange medical advice and describe the exact colour, timing, fluid intake, alcohol exposure, medicines, supplements, and recent illness. Do not start detox products or stop prescribed medicines without guidance. A clinician may check urine, liver enzymes, bilirubin, blood clotting, kidney function, and signs of infection. Avoid alcohol until the cause is clear and follow any fluid advice linked to your health.

Go to urgent care for confusion, unusual sleepiness, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, yellowing with rapid deterioration, or inability to keep fluids down. Very little urine, easy bleeding, or a swollen abdomen also requires urgent assessment. A person with known liver disease should follow their specialist's emergency instructions for any sudden change.
