Dark urine even when hydrated: what it can mean

Short answer
Dark urine despite good hydration may reflect concentrated urine, food or medicines, blood, muscle pigments, or a liver-related problem.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer
Dark urine despite good hydration may reflect concentrated urine, food or medicines, blood, muscle pigments, or a liver-related problem. One darker sample is not enough to identify the cause. The shade, smell, timing, other symptoms, and any new medicine or supplement all provide useful clues.
What the change may mean
Urine can look amber or brown after a long gap between bathroom visits, heavy sweating, vomiting, or diarrhoea, even when you have recently started drinking. Heat exposure can contribute to fluid loss; see the pages on Dehydration and Heat Exhaustion for related symptoms. Food dyes and some medicines can also alter colour. Tea-coloured urine with yellow skin or eyes, pale stools, nausea, or discomfort under the right ribs needs assessment because it can accompany a liver problem such as Hepatitis A or Hepatitis B. Red, pink, or cola-coloured urine may indicate blood or muscle pigment and should not be dismissed.
What to do now
Look at the next few urine samples in natural light and note whether the colour changes after ordinary drinking and rest. Avoid forcing large amounts of water. Record recent exercise, heat exposure, foods, supplements, and medicines, and note pain, burning, fever, or changes in bowel movements. If the colour persists, arrange a clinical review; a clinician may check a urine sample and blood tests to distinguish concentration, bleeding, muscle breakdown, and liver or kidney causes.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical help for dark urine with severe weakness, confusion, fainting, very little urine, severe abdominal or back pain, or repeated vomiting. Prompt assessment is also needed for visible blood, yellow skin or eyes, fever with chills, or dark urine after strenuous exercise. These combinations can signal a problem that needs examination rather than home observation.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which urine and blood tests could clarify the colour, whether a medicine or supplement may be responsible, and whether your liver and kidney function should be checked. Tell the clinician when the change began, how often it appears, and what other symptoms occur.
